Boro crushed their League One opponents as they powered into the third round of the Carling Cup with a 5-1 win at the Riverside Stadium.

Mido began the rout before new signings Didier Digard and Marvin Emnes marked their full debuts with goals. Jeremie Aliadiere and Adam Johnson were also on target.

Southgate, who made seven changes from the side beaten at Liverpool on Saturday, said: "Apart from the goal just before half-time, it was everything we wanted.

"I'm really pleased with the attitude. We made the changes but it didn't affect how we approached the game or played it and we showed we have some strength in depth.

"People got off the mark and it was a good display.

"People wanted to impress tonight but they all did it in the right way. They were great individual goals but they all played for the team."

Southgate was pleased with the performances of summer signings Digard and Emnes as well as Justin Hoyte, who also made his first start.

He added: "There is still some adaptation to take place but it was easier for them to fit in tonight.

"There are loads of positives and that's because, as a group, they have been working well from day one."

Yeovil boss Russell Slade made light of the defeat by admitting the step up in class was too much for his side.

The Somerset side were outgunned in all departments and their goal, against the run of play from Gavin Tomlin before half-time, was nothing more than consolation.

Slade said: "It was a very difficult evening for us, I thought Middlesbrough were excellent in patches.

"We were a little bit out of our depth from time to time but it was a good lesson for us.

"I think the players have enjoyed it and we are not too downbeat about it, which is the important thing.

"We will learn one or two lessons and hopefully we can get back to winning ways in the league.

"You've got to smile sometimes and I was enjoying some of the football Middlesbrough played. It was a pleasure to watch, although it hurt when it hit the back of the net."
