The injury will keep Borrello out of the 2018 World Cup squad. The 22-year-old Socceroos bolter had become a warm favourite for a late-inclusion due to his inspired form in the 2.Bundesliga for now-relegated FC Kaiserslautern.

A run of three goals in four games for the German club, in addition to four assists notched early in the season plunged the winger into contention after a swap to left midfield saw a sparkling return.

Earlier in the season, Thomas Broich said he'd reached another level since moving to Germany from Brisbane Roar.

“He’s got something to offer — he’s a very courageous young player, he’s full of energy, he’s got assists in him, he’s got goals in him and he can always give you a boost when you need it.”

After a slow start to life in Germany, Borrello usurped the more highly-fancied Jamie Maclaren, who couldn't earn consistent game-time at Darmstadt 08, to become a key player for his struggling German side.

His breakthrough came when Kaiserslautern changed coaches - Borrello had barely made an appearance for the side at the time - but until his injury he had played almost every minute over the last 10 matches.

The Aussie will end the season with three goals and seven assists in 17 matches. Borrello's yet to be capped for the Socceroos, but the 22-year-old has made plenty of international appearances at U/20 and U/23 level.
