AC Milan striker Marco Borriello will undergo knee surgery on Friday which will cause him to miss the start of the Serie A season.
Borriello sustained an injury to his right leg on Sunday and is expected to be sidelined for at least two months.
"AC Milan forward Marco Borriello will undergo surgery on his right knee on Friday in Antwerp," the club confirmed.
Borriello's injury is a blow for coach Carlo Ancelotti, who had hoped to have the Italy international in top form prior to the beginning of the campaign.
The 26-year-old returned to the Rossoneri outfit this summer after enjoying a sensational campaign for Genoa, where he notched 19 goals to finish as the third top scorer in Serie A.
