Mark Bosnich believes the A-League is better with VAR, but the technology needs to be suspended until the kinks are ironed out.
James Donachie's offside flick-down in the lead-up to Melbourne Victory's winner in the A-League Grand Final has sparked new controversy about the already under-fire VAR system.
VAR was unable to overrule the decision due to a technical failure, which Bosnich believes is a sign the technology is not ready for use.
However he doesn't believe it should be scrapped entirely.
“This is something that needs to be suspended, and why I say suspended and not binned completely is because I don’t want to be sitting here in 12 months time saying if we had a VAR that grand final result would have been different," he told Foxsports.
“In terms of world football we’ll be guided by FIFA. I’m willing to accept any decision but you’re right I’ve been a strident proponent of VAR. But in its present form, and when I say in its present form, the obvious error thing has to be taken out in my opinion.
"Because then you’ve got VAR officials judging is it obvious, is it not? If I foul John Kosmina right now, it’s a foul I don’t care if it’s obvious or not, if it’s a foul, and I think that’s causing a lot of confusion."
FFA apologised for the technology after the match but two players from the losing finalists, Newcastle Jets' Daniel Georgievski and Ronny Vargas, responded that "sorry would not do."
“Interpretations have to get better, over here this season we’ve had probably 12,500 minutes if you include the grand final – the vast majority of the time it’s been fine," Bosnich said.
"But the interpretation at some crucial moments has not been good. That needs to improve so that means more training.”
