The Chelsea man left training on Wednesday to travel to the hospital to be with his wife, who was admitted after suffering complications with the pregnancy.

Boulahrouz returned to training with his team-mates at the Stade Olympique de la Pontaise in Lausanne on Thursday, putting him back in contention for Holland's quarter-final clash with Russia on Saturday.

And Van Basten revealed Boulahrouz is keen to play in their last-eight match despite the tragedy.

"He's with the squad and said he will do everything to play on Saturday," said coach Marco van Basten of the 26-year-old, who started all three of Holland's Group C matches in Bern.

"He can see his wife whenever he wants to.

"I understand that it's very difficult for Khalid and we are trying to help him as much as we can. But from a certain moment onwards the focus has to turn towards Russia.

"He understands that and that's what he wants as well."

All other media activities were cancelled on Thursday and the Dutch flag at their base in Lausanne was flown at half-mast.
