EXCLUSIVE: Dean Bouzanis is poised to play for the Young Socceroos at September’s World Cup while a loan club could give the Liverpool reserve keeper valuable first-team experience.
Australia's national U20 side has qualified for September's World U20 Cup to be held in Egypt. Bouzanis, 18, trained at the AIS last week to give U20 boss Jan Versleijen the chance to run the rule over the former Sydney FC glovesman.
The Liverpool keeper appears a certainty to be picked as Australia's number one keeper for the showpiece event after last year playing for Greece U19s in order to gain some international experience.
Over the next two months, the Young Socceroos will tour Argentina in July and Cyprus in August to prepare for their World Cup jaunt in September. Bouzanis is expected to be included in the squad.
With the Olympics in 2012 in England, many see Bouzanis as the ideal number one for our Olyroo campaign. After that, he may well become a fixture in the green and gold, such is his undoubted potential.
"Australian football's excelled in the last few years and I hope to be part of it as soon as I can," the Sydney-born keeper added.
"Obviously this campaign [2010] might be a bit too soon for me but if I keep doing well in another two years... To be part of that squad [Olyroos 2012] would be a great thing."
Meanwhile, at club level a loan spell could be arranged to give Bouzanis first team experience over the coming season.
"I'm happy that [Liverpool manager Rafael] Benitez wants me to stay," he added. "If I keep doing well, you never know what could happen; hopefully I'll get a break."
While in Sydney on holiday, Bouzanis will drop in to see his former goalkeeper coach Jim Fraser at the former Socceroo's goalkeeper's academy in the west of Sydney (http://www.internationalgoalkeepers.com).
Fraser worked with Bouzanis as a 16-year-old at Sydney FC and at the academy, and describes the talented teen as "special".
"He's a friend of mine," said Bouzanis of Fraser. "And it's good that he's trying to help goalkeepers to come through the system."
Speaking at last night's Johnny Warren Foundation Gala dinner, Bouzanis described Warren as "an idol" to younger, up-and-coming players like himself.
