Gillingham failed to take their chances but when Mark Bentley hit a close-range effort it was Bouzanis, on loan at Stanley from Liverpool, who denied them with a wonder stop.

Accrington worked hard and had several second-half opportunities, before John Miles clinched the tie for the cash-strapped League Two with a fine solo goal with 10 minutes to go.

Bouzanis, whose loan deal at Accrington expires on January 30, will be available for Stanley's cup clash with Fulham which takes place on Saturday January 23 at the Crown Ground.

Elsewhere overnight, Trent McClenahan put in a full shift for Hamilton Academical as they were knocked out of the Scottish Cup in extra-time 2-0 by Rangers.

Scott McDonald was missing due to a hernia injury as Celtic scraped through into the next round of the Scottish Cup with a 1-0 win over Erik Paartalu's Morton.

In England's Johnstone's Paint Trophy semi-final first-leg, Neil Kilkenny and Patrick Kisnorbo's hopes of lifting silverware with Leeds United this season were dealt a blow after a 2-1 loss to Carlisle at Elland Road.

Kisnorbo wasn't in the Leeds side, while Kilkenny did play a full game for the Whites but was unable to prevent a shock loss.
