Scottish Hibs star Martin Boyle is set to be called up today for the Socceroos squad to face Kuwait later this month...but he won't win a cap yet.
According to reports in the UK, Boyle has been told to expect to be called into the Australian training camp in the UAE even if he can't actually take to the field for the Kuwait game.
Although Boyle's father was born in Sydney and the FFA first made contact through World Cup caretaker coach Bert van Marwijk more than six months ago, the FIFA paperwork allowing him to play for Australia has not yet come through.
But Roos coach Graham Arnold is said to be keen to get the Hibs winger – who plays alongside Socceroos Jamie Maclaren and Mark Milligan at their Edinburgh club – into the green and gold fold as soon as possible.
"The camp in the UAE will provide us with the chance to develop our play further and put our new style into a game situation," said Arnold.
"And it will provide me with a great chance to look at the new players. I am confident that we will take further strides forward during the October camp."
The FFA believe FIFA will finally rubber-stamp the required paperwork in time for the upcoming friendlies against South Korea and Lebanon in Australia in November.
And if Boyle can integrate into the evolving new Socceroos squad – which will be minus talismanic veterans Mile Jedinak and Tim Cahill – he could play a key role in the Asian Cup campaign in January.
Aberdeen-born Boyle has been in superb form in the Scottish Premiership this season and is technically still eligible to play for the country of his birth if he were to be called up for Scotland's match next week.
He has been consistently overlooked by Scottish coaches since playing for the Scottish U16s, but yesterday Scotland coach Alex McLeish admitted he had considered calling up the 25 year old to face Portugal on October 14.
McLeish was pragmatic about the interest from the Socceroos though and told the Scottish Daily Record: "What will be will be."
