"The confidence is not quite there yet," he told FourFourTwo online before leaving for Shanghai. "We want to be a side that thinks it can win against not only Shanghai Shenhua but any side we play against."

Culina was also aware of the importance of doing well for the country's sake. "We want to play on the big stage and represent Australia well," added Culina, who has assisted Young Socceroos sides in the past. "If we don't get the result obviously people won’t be happy, so it’s important to play good football but not be silly."

Recuperating FC midfielder Terry McFlynn says the sessions under Culina have been "intense and more structured" and added, "it's a happier place to be."
