Melbourne City midfielder Luke Brattan admits the season is a failure after being knocked out by Perth Glory 2-0 at home on Sunday’s elimination final.
City would take positives after lifting the FFA Cup last year but Brattan was not shying away after an opportunity missed.
“Of course it’s a failure, the City Group are about being successful, that’s why all this money has been invested, the facilities coaching staff, background staff and players,” Brattan said.
“I said during the week this is the best squad I’ve been a part of for a long time and that’s not always everything.
“You can have the best individual players but if you don’t play well as a team and don’t do the right things on the park then you’re not going to get anywhere in this league which is getting better and better each year.”
Glory coach Kenny Lowe highlighted City’s decision to go with Osama Malik over Brattan helped the visitors break them down.
And Brattan agreed that they were forced to adapt to Glory’s shape.
“I don’t think we played our game, we were too worried about the way they were going to play,” he said.
“We’ve got to play the way we play and that’s high intensity, possession-based, attacking football and I don’t think we did that.”
And after City’s strong start to the season, Brattan said they just did not replicate those strong performances.
“We just stopped doing what we were doing in the first couple of rounds, simple as that,” he said.
“Must have got to our head because for some reason we changed the way we were playing.
“We’re going to have to look at that, look at ourselves in the mirror and in the end it wasn’t good enough.”
