THE JOEYS lost to Brazil by the slimmest of margins in the U17s Woirld Cup this morning - but their hopes of qualifying from the group stage are still alive and well despite the 1-0 defeat.
A stunning goal from a Brazil free kick was all that separated the two sides when the Australian youngsters took on the three times former winners of the competition.
After a first-up 2-1 victory over the Ivory Coast, Australia were brave in defeat against the South Americans in Guadalajara and will now enter their last group match against Denmark potentially needing just a point to progress to the next stage.
Both sides contributed to a cagey beginning with the Joeys' intent to keep the ball on the deck admirable, despite the occasional difficulties presented by an artificial pitch.
Hernan Espindola carved out the first real chance of the match after 15 minutes but his right-foot shot sailed wide, while the highly-fancied Brazil were struggling to break down an impressive Australian side.
Further opportunities to Espindola and West Ham United youngster Dylan Tombides failed to yield a first-half goal for Australia as both sides went into the break goalless.
Brazil looked far more threatening going forward in the second half and could have taken the lead with just over 25 minutes remaining, only for Marlon Bica's volley to deflect away to safety.
Bica followed up Australian goalkeeper Paul Izzo's save from Matheus and was unlucky, but Brazil started to control the match and the goal that seemed imminent came with just 14 minutes remaining.
After winning a free-kick, Adryan struck the dead-ball with precision as his shot sailed above the wall and kept moving away from Izzo before smashing into the top-left corner.
It was a goal fit to win any game and although Mitch Cooper had a late chance to snare an equaliser for Australia, his volley flew over the bar, as Jan Versleijen's side were forced to settle for a credible loss.
All attention now turns to the final group match on June 26, when Australia battle with Denmark, who were beaten 3-0 by Brazil in their first group match, a result which will give the Joeys confidence in preparation for what is likely to be a do-or-die encounter.
