Phillipe Coutinho opened the scoring after 20 minutes with a brilliant curling shot that hit the post on its way into the net.

Brazil dominated the first half with over 60 percent possession and countless incisions into the box.

Come the second stanza, Vladimir Petkovic's Switzerland were a new team. They put Brazil on the back foot and Steven Zuber equalised with a header from a corner 15 minutes after the restart.

Brazil were shaky after that, coughing up possession as Switzerland tightened their grip on the match.

A setback for Brazil but a stunning result for Switzerland, who have boosted their chances of making the round of 16 by twofold.

BRAZIL

Alisson Becker - 5

Wasn't needed very much to bring Brazil out of any trouble as the first half was dominated by the Seleção. Was left out in the cold by Miranda who didn't pick up Zuber at the corner.

Marcelo - 7

The world's best left-back moved forward with ease and even found himself central at times when attacking. A man of the match performance at left-back with a brilliant defensive display.

Thiago Silva - 5

Came very close with a powerful header from a corner that just flew over the bar in first-half stoppage time.

Miranda - 4

Dreadful defending of Steven Zuber at the corner where the Swiss winger was able to stand his ground in the six yard box and simply head in the equaliser.

Danilo - 5

Danilo had always been Brazil's number two right-back but after Dani Alves was ruled out of the tournament, the Manchester City full-back came in and was quiet in the opening match for Brazil.

Paulinho - 5.5

The first clear-cut chance of the match fell to the Barcelona midfielder as Neymar pulled it back, but Paulinho's snapshot trickled inches past the post. Subbed off for Renato Augusto to add some firepower for the winner.

Casemiro - 4.5

A few hospital passes leading to some frustration and eventually a yellow card for the Real Madrid midfielder. Subbed off for Fernandinho in an attempt to cement a hold on the match and grab a winner.

Phillipe Coutinho - 7

With two touches he had opened up acres of space through the middle to feed Jesus and the rest of the front line. An absolute peach of a finish inside the post to open the scoring.

Willian - 5

Dangerous on the counter-attack and getting back to defend when the tide of the match shifted over to Switzerland. Hardly as active in the second half in attack and it was a rather disappointing game from the 29-year old.

Neymar Jr. - 6

Neymar had a frustrating first half, not being able to get into the spaces that he wanted to. It seemed Switzerland did their homework to try and outwit the world's most expensive player. Individually, Neymar wasn't spectacular either and wasn't penetrating like we know he can.

Gabriel Jesus - 4.5

Quick and persistent with the ball at his feet. Switzerland sat deep to prevent getting opened up by space in behind and Jesus' pace. As a result the striker had little impact on the match.

Substitutes

Fernandinho - 5

Had no answers to Switzerland's watertight, compact midfield in the second half.

Renato Augusto - 5

Tite subbed off two midfielders to create some more chances when the scores were tied at 1-1.

Roberto Firmino - N/A

Jesus struggled and Firmino was brought in with a bit more experience for Brazil.

SWITZERLAND

Yann Sommer - 7

Composed on the ball when playing out from the back, even with pressure from Gabriel Jesus. A finger nail prevented Paulinho from opening the scoring for Brazil in the tenth minute. He also denied Firmino in the final few minutes.

Ricardo Rodriguez - 6.5

Was in the wars early on, with almost every ball in a Swiss attack coming through him. An astute crosser of the ball, once Brazil prevented his ability to get forward it nullified a key part of Switzerland's tactical approach.

Manuel Akanji - 7.5

Looked confident at the back and even had the courage to stream forward in possession, going up against Coutinho and Jesus on the dribble.

Fabian Schar - 6

Successfully cleared Marcelo's cross only for it to fall to Coutinho who curled in a pearler of a goal. After the storm the La Coruña defender dealt with the impending dangers from Brazil's plucky front line.

Stephan Lichsteiner - 6

Got forward well with some interplay with Xerdan Shaqiri, opening up spaces for crosses. But, Marcelo's defending was a brick wall that Lichsteiner struggled to break down.

Granit Xhaka - 6.5

Looked shaky after Brazil opened the scoring giving away possession and being vulnerable on the counter-attack. Steadied himself in the second half as Switzerland built momentum following their equaliser.

Valon Behrami - 6.5

Came deep to get the ball but by attempting to make Switzerland more dynamic, he only made their attacking play gradually slower. A brilliant start for the Swiss in the second half saw the 33-year old break out of the shell.

Blerim Dzemaili - 5

The first chance of the match came through him with a volley over the bar in the second minute. He threatened only a little more in the second stanza of the match.

Steven Zuber - 7

Stationed at left wing he found himself moving centrally to find space on the ball but his final touch in the final third prevented Switzerland from having any positive penetration in the first half. Came up trumps in the second half with the equaliser from the corner with their first shot on target.

Xerdan Shaqiri - 7.5

Switzerland's best outlet going forward.  Playing on the right flank, Shaqiri's bag of tricks weren't enough to open up Brazil. However, he helped his team on and off the ball covering a lot of ground.

Haris Seferovic - 6

Very isolated as Switzerland's wingers and midfielders struggled to find space and time on the ball. Even when Rodriguez and Switzerland's wingers got time to measure crosses he was still isolated and taken care of by Miranda and Thiago Silva.

Substitutes

Denis Zakaria - 6

The exciting Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder came on for Behrami for some muscle in midfield.

Breel Embolo - N/A

Couldn't provide the spark to find the winner.

Michael Lang - 6

Did well to keep out Brazil in the final minutes of the match to keep the scores level.
