Massimo Maccarone put the hosts in front with barely two minutes on the clock but Bosko Jankovic nabbed the equaliser in the 24th minute and Palermo took the lead six minutes later through Fabrizio Miccoli.

Maccarone's second of the game shortly before the hour mark hauled his side level but the players then seemed happy to play out a draw as the second half was as drab as the first had been spectacular.

Neither side had much to play for except pride although Siena, who equalled their best Serie A points haul of 43 with a an impressive 2-2 draw against Internazionale last week, were keen to set a new record.

The game burst into life right from kick-off as the Bianconeri stormed into an early lead.

A great through-ball from Christian Rigano released his strike partner Maccarone who controlled the ball perfectly before slotting it past Palermo keeper Federico Agliardi into the bottom left corner.

Palermo came close to equalising just five minutes later when Rigano felled Fabrizio Miccoli in a dangerous position.

But Siena keeper Dimitrios Eleftheropoulos did well to push away Miccoli's stunning 30-yard free-kick for a corner.

Palermo slowly began to take control of the game with the ever-dangerous Miccoli at the heart of most of their attacks.

And the visitors netted the equaliser in the 24th minute.

Giulio Migliaccio did well to pick out an unmarked Jankovic just inside the penalty area and the Serbian fired across Agliardi and into the bottom left corner.

Siena almost immediately restored their advantage with Maccarone's powerful free-kick which Agliardi just managed to push away to safety.

But on the half-hour mark Palermo took the lead when a good cross from Fabio Caserta on the left was met by an unmarked Miccoli whose header looped over Agliardi and into the back of the net.

Miccoli almost doubled his tally seconds later but his thunderbolt was pushed away by Eleftheropoulos.

Siena came close to swiftly restoring parity but Rigano's header in the 33rd minute was agonisingly brushed the top of the bar.

And Rigano missed an even better opportunity on the stroke of half-time as he found himself unmarked in the six-yard box but somehow managed to head into the stands.

The start to the second-half was as frantic as the first.

Maccarone should have equalised 10 minutes after the restart when Rigano flicked on Alberto's cross but he blazed over the bar.

However, the home fans did not have to wait long to see their side draw level.

Just three minutes later Maccarone stole the ball off Cristian Zaccardo and raced towards goal, rounding former Siena defender Leandro Rinaudo before firing into the back of the net.

An emotional moment minutes later saw Mirko Guadalupi make his debut, replacing Alberto who was making his last appearance for Siena.

The youngster almost scored immediately with a fierce effort that just brushed past the outside of the post.

That was to be the last decent effort of the game as the players then seemed content to sit back and play out the last 25 minutes.
