EXCLUSIVE: Socceroo Mark Bresciano has spoken exclusively to au.fourfourtwo.com about Australia's first World Cup qualifier against Qatar on February 6 at Melbourne's Telstra Dome.
With Bresciano and Vince Grella both set to play in the Serie A three days before the Wednesday night match with Qatar, the issue of A-League versus Euro-Socceroos continues to be a hot topic of debate.
Bresciano described Australia's home games as "fundamental" to Australia's success in the group.
And he understands the difficulty new coach Pim Verbeek has in bringing a Socceroo squad together on a non-FIFA date for such an important game.
“Is one or two going to make a difference? Or is it enough? And would they perform better than how a fresh A-League player who's been in camp will perform?” Bresciano asks.
“I think the first qualifier against Qatar will be a trial and error as there'll be other situations like this. Maybe this will test the waters now.
“The first qualifier will be a test to see what's the best way to go about it.”
Bresciano wasn't aware that Verbeek had begun to bring A-League players together for training camps, but said he was fully committed to playing for Australia whenever called.
And he hinted Australia's second World Cup qualifier in March in China may see more European based Socceroos in the green and gold. “Playing in China's a bit different because there are less hours to travel.”
Speaking to au.fourfourtwo.com just hours before his club side Palermo lost 3-0 to Sampdoria in Genoa on Sunday, Bresciano added that he hadn't yet spoken to the new Socceroo coach.
“We'd been trying to get a hold of each other just before Christmas," he revealed. "Every time he rang I had my phone off.
"Every time I rang he had his voicemail on saying he was going to Australia. So I thought we'd kind of talk when we see each other.”
