Bresh was part of the Palermo squad that beat the European giants 2-1 last week – and Bresciano believes McSocceroo McDonald can add to the Italian club’s misery.

Milan have had a poor start to the season, not helped by an injury to goalkeeper Dida which has seen another Aussie Zeljko Kalac take the gloves for Milan with so far disappointing results. AC are now trailing seven points behind city rivals Inter after a series of draws and the Palermo defeat.

"Scott has been at a couple of Australian training camps with me and been quite impressive," Bresciano told Scotland’s Herald newspaper. "He's maybe not started many games for Australia, but he's a guy who's very important to the future of the national side.

"I think he's the kind of player who can unsettle Milan and cause their central defenders a few problems. He has that little burst of pace to go in behind them and the sharpness that can get them turned.

"Scott's got a lot of good qualities and it would be just fantastic for Australian football if he was to show them against a team such as Milan. It doesn't get any bigger than playing the European champions, but I'm sure there won't be any fear on his part.

"I knew that he had settled in well at Celtic and scoring a hat trick proves that Scott is in excellent form. I'll definitely watch the game against Milan and I really hope to see him do well. It's an exciting time for his career right now."

But the Aussie legend – who twice came close to scoring against Argentina for the Socceroos last month – has warned Celtic not to ignore the quality in AC Milan despite the current drop in form.

"One win in six matches is enough to have people asking questions of Milan," he said. "But I think it's mainly been down to a lot of bad luck in most of those games. Even against us, they hit the bar twice and we scored right at the end of the game to get the win.

"The way I look at it is that they are like a sleeping giant trying to wake up. When they do, teams are going to get hurt. It's only a matter of time before they start winning matches again, and a lot of them.

"We have to remember this is the European champions we are talking about. But one thing to look at is that they do play very centrally. They always try and get at you through the middle and teams have been able to frustrate them recently.

"But, like I said, that can't go on forever. With players such as Kaka around, they are going to start winning soon."
