Emerton admitted it was down to Socceroos coach Holger Osieck to make the call - but he was thrilled at the prospect of the blockbuster clash against Sydney's interstate rivals.

Emerton’s return to Australian football with Sydney FC and the arrival of fellow Socceroo Harry Kewell at Melbourne Victory would set up a dream opening match to the new season.

But Emerton and Kewell’s availability for the opening match of the season is still unclear with the Socceroos playing Malaysia in a friendly match in Canberra the night before Sydney FC meet Melbourne Victory on October 8.

Australia then play a World Cup Qualifier against Oman in Sydney on Tuesday 11 October.

Emerton is expected to be named in the Socceroo squad for both matches, which would effectively rule him out of what is looming as the biggest non finals match in the history of the Hyundai A-League.

“I’d love to play in the game against Melbourne Victory,"  Emerton said after completing his first 75-minute training session with Sydney.

"It’s going to be a huge match with myself and Harry (Kewell) both coming home and of course I’d like to make my debut on that night.

“Thankfully the decision about whether I can play or not is not mine to make and I’ll wait to see what happens.

"I have always said I love for playing for the national team and that hasn’t changed. We’ll wait and see but I’d love to play in the (Sydney FC v Melbourne Victory) match.”

He added: "Obviously the situation is out of my hands but I don't think a decision has been reached as yet.

"there's been a lot made of it, it's not just about me and Harry. It's about the two teams and I'm not looking at it that way, me versus him."

Emerton, who was released from his contract by English Premier League club Blackburn Rovers, said he hadn't dictated to Sydney coach Vitezslav Lavicka about his role in the team and best position.

"I've had a brief chat to him and it's all about where he wants me to play, not about me telling him. I would just fit in wherever he thinks I'm best suited in this team," he said.

Sydney FC coach Vitezslav Lavicka also told the media he would love his new recruit to pull on the sky blues number 7 shirt for the match but said he would respect the decision of Osieck.

“I think it would be very good for Sydney FC and also for football fans in the A-League if the two stars, Brett and Harry, who have come home to play in the A-League can play against each other in the first match,” Lavicka said.

“I have been a national coach before and I respect it is Holger’s decision and it is difficult to keep clubs and the national team both happy.”

Holger Osieck announces the squad to take on Malaysia and Oman next Tuesday.

Emerton will play his first game in Sydney FC colours this Saturday  against Perth Glory at WIN Jubilee Stadium in Kogarah in a pre season friendly as part of Sydney FC’s annual Community Fan Day.

The Fan Day starts at 12.30pm and Sydney kick off against Perth at 3pm.
