SOCCEROOS new boy Mark Bridge won’t allow himself to be seduced by hype or headlines with the striker looking to adopt the role of the quiet achiever.
The Sydney FC man made his senior bow in Saturday’s goalless draw with Singapore and has been included in Pim Verbeek’s squad for Wednesday’s World Cup qualifier against China in Kunming.
Elevation to senior Socceroo status cranks up the level of scrutiny and interest but Bridge appears to be one of those players that doesn’t fall for the ‘hype’ or the highs and lows that publicity can trigger.
While some players are rarely out of the press for reason or another, the Sydney FC man has a steely determination to ignore all the fuss and distractions and simply focus on becoming an even better player.
And although he knows each performance will be increasingly scrutinised, it won’t matter to Bridge. He cannot escape the verdict of his harshest critic – himself!
He told au.fourfourtwo.com: “I don’t need my name to be written in the papers and that to know if I’ve played good or bad.
“I tend not to read stuff about myself to be honest. I’m my own judge of character and performance. I know myself what I’m capable of and when I’ve achieved it and when I haven’t. I don’t need to hear it from anyone else.”
Bridge is joined in the squad by former Newcastle Jets colleagues Jade North, Ante Covic and Adam Griffiths for Wednesday’s clash at altitude.
