Brighton boss Chris Hughton has backed his Australian goalkeeper Mat Ryan following his blunder in Sunday’s 3-2 friendly loss to Atletico Madrid.
The newly promoted Seagulls will take on Manchester City on Saturday in their Premier League opener, with Ryan set to retain his spot.
Ryan made a mistake for Atletico’s first goal, allowing Nico Gaitan’s speculative shot from outside the box to slip from his grasp and into the net.
Despite that, Hughton backed the Socceroo who made several good saves throughout the contest with the Champions League semi-finalists.
“He would be the one in the whole stadium that feels it the most,” Hughton said.
“He’d made two good saves before that, and overall, if you took that out of the game, he’s had a very good game.
“But that’s what goalkeepers do, they are the last line and even the top goalkeepers will make mistakes.
“It’s not about the mistakes they make, but how they react from it.”

Ryan was a Brighton club record signing when he joined for a reported $8.4million fee from Valencia.
The Seagulls have since broken that record, splashing out a reported $9.9m for PSV Eindhoven’s Davy Propper.
Ryan spent the second-half of last season on loan with Belgian club Genk from Valencia, after battling for game-time in Spain.
