“I’m glad he said that,” Popovic said, in replay to Beckham’s comments that LA Galaxy played Sydney FC in a “friendly that wasn’t very friendly”.

“When we played them last time it was very competitive. I think he forgets they went over the top a little bit and we played it strong and fair and hard and we look forward to the opportunity of playing them again. I hope we do and I’m sure it won’t be friendly once again.”

Popovic was referring to two incidents when LA Galaxy defender Kevin Harmse injured Juninho with a late tackle from behind and was later sent off for stomping on Adam Biddle’s arm.

While the pre-match talk has centred on a possible clash with LA Galaxy in the final or 3rd/4th playoff, Sydney FC must first contend with reigning MLS Champions Houston Dynamo.

Houston has won back-to-back MLS titles and will present a difficult task for Sydney FC with Coach John Kosmina shifting regular striker Alex Brosque into a midfield role for the game.

Brosque, who scored eight goals in the 2007/08 Hyundai A-League is looking forward to the challenge and relishing the possibility of getting more possession.

“Midfield is probably one of the most demanding positions on the park,” Brosque said. “You are constantly getting the ball and constantly having to keep it. You have to take a lot more care with your first touch and your vision as well so it’s going to be a test but I’m looking forward to seeing how I go.”
