Victory were too strong for Roar’s 10 men, winning the game 4-2. If you’re watching the replay of this game just switch it off at half time. All six goals and the red card came in the first 45.

Roar tried to start strong but Victory soon imposed their will on the hosts. Chances came thick and fast with excellent one touch passing. Kosta Barbarouses scored two, Keisuke Honda slotted a penalty and Ola Toivonen troubled the scorers at both ends. Honda gave Brisbane their penalty too, so both Victory attacking imports made a dent at the wrong end as well.

In one of Real Madrid's most outstanding performances at the Camp Nou, Los Blancos beat FC Barcelona 3-1 in the Spanish Supercup. Real were leading 2-1 after Cristiano Ronaldo's 80th minute goal, but just before the final whistle, we sealed the win with this beautiful Marco Asensio strike.

Eric Bautheac lost his head and saw two slices of cheese, one for the tackle and one for the afters. It was a crazy first half. In comparison, the second half was a bit of a fizzer. Victory dominated possession but didn’t fashion many good chances until late. Brisbane just held on.

John Aloisi will need to do some more soul searching with his team through the week. The results just aren’t there right now. Kevin Muscat will be grinning all the way back to Melbourne.

Brisbane Roar

Jamie Young 6

He’s been a very strong performer over the last few seasons. Despite the score line he wasn’t at fault for any of the Victory goals.

Dane Ingham 4

In his first start for a year he had to deal with the dynamic Victory attack. It’s a hard ask for an A League full back. Victory are playing a style that has been rare in the league until now. A League full backs are used to dealing with a winger who plays wide. Victory often leave that space free and play narrow then exploit the space. Tough to defend.

Avraam Papadopoulos 6

The giant Greek defender copped quite the smack to the face. With Victory’s movement and attacking verve he was probably seeing double before he got hit. He made some great last ditch defensive efforts to keep the score to four.

Daniel Bowles 5

He wasn’t as assured as Papadopoulos and this hurt Brisbane when he missed a few passes out of defence.

Connor O’Toole 4

Another full back who struggled with his defensive duties. He also butchered one of Brisbane’s few good counter attacks as well.

Thomas Kristensen 3

Victory dominated the midfield and Kristensen didn’t have an effect on the blue wave that swamped his defence. Hard with ten men but he needed to do better.

Alex Lopez 4

He really struggled with Victory’s midfield. His best contributions were reading and cutting out a couple of Victory back heel attempts.

Matt McKay 6.5

Gets a bonus point for his cheeky first minute grin after being awarded a corner for a very wayward shot. Showed commendable leadership to ensure Papadopoulos got some first aid for a head injury. Otherwise it was a tough night for the veteran.

Eric Bautheac 1

With that sort of violence he must have thought he was wearing yellow in Paris rather than Orange in Brisbane. But there’s no excuse for his actions.

Stefan Mauk 4

Was rather anonymous tonight. Which is better than coming on and getting a red card.

Adam Taggart 7

Tonight was his hundredth game and he got to despatch a penalty but otherwise he didn’t get many chances. His hold up play as a lone striker for ten men was impressive. His team mates need to use this aspect of his game more.

SUBS

Henrique 5

This is how he should be used this season, off the bench to make an impact. He was prominent when he came on because the game had slowed down.

Nicholas D’Agostino 5

Didn’t get much of a chance to make an impact but he certainly felt an impact. He bruised his hip after mounting Hope.

Dylan Wenzel-Halls N/A

Didn’t get enough ball in his short spell.

Melbourne Victory

Lawrence Thomas 6

Didn’t have much to do but still managed to concede twice.

Corey Brown 7

Gets an assist against his former club. He also contributed to the Victory dominance in possession with some really assured passes into midfield.

Leigh Broxham 7.5

Victory’s famous Mr Fixit should also be known as Mr Consistent. He really hasn’t had many average performances in the last few seasons. He was solid in defence and again won an embarrassingly large amount of headers.

Thomas Deng 7

Did a few aimless clearances in the first half. He tightened this up in the second half but he also went off with a mystery niggle so hopefully that’s not too bad. Central defence is a problem position for Victory right now.

Storm Roux 7

He really should have scored in the first half. He was good tonight but he’s been better.

Carl Valeri - 7

Solid performance from the Victory captain. It’s pretty easy for him this year, just pass the ball to Honda and then relax.

Terry Antonis - 8

Is he or Oikonimidis the most in-form Australian in the A League? Provided a backheel nutmeg in the lead up for Victory’s second goal. Gorgeous. He could have scored a couple himself.

Keisuke Honda - 9

Who’d have thought that he and Toivonen would first team up to deny Brisbane a goal? For the rest of the game, Honda was reading the Brisbane midfield like they were a cheap manga. His efforts in winning the ball back resulted in Barbarouses’s first goal and so much more besides. Giving away a penalty hurt his performance a little but really, Japan are crazy for letting this man retire.

James Troisi - 8

Provided an absolutely beautiful assist for the opening goal. Otherwise his play was a little inconsistent, sometimes brilliant, sometimes not quite right.

Kosta Barbarouses - 9

A sumptuous finish for Victory’s first goal and another good touch for the fourth. He’s loving his new fluid position in the frontline. He’s getting a lot of joy in the channels and so much support from the rest of the attack. A very good performance.

Ola Toivonen - 8

His early important contribution was a first minute goal line clearance. He later neatly finished off a good cross from Corey Brown. Then an own goal might have stung his Viking pride.

SUBS

Nick Ansell - 5

Kept things safe and secure

Josh Hope - 6

Really brought Victory back to life when he came on. Should have had a couple of assists. An excellent cameo.

Ramat Akbari - N/A

One touch after coming on.
