McKay has struggled to find a first team place since making the move to the Scottish Premier League giants last year.

He has made just three first team appearances, despite winning man of the match accolades, scoring and setting goals up during his rare game day cameos.

Rangers agreed to loan the reigning A-League player of the year to Saudi Arabian side Al Ittihad but McKay turned down the chance of a move to stay at Ibrox and try to establish himself in the team.

But since then he has continued to be a bit part player in struggling manager Ally McCoist's plans.

Now the Scottish press are reporting Roar have put a request in to Rangers for the return of their talismanic skipper on loan.

The Brisbane side have slipped to third spot in the league and McKay's injection of talent could revitalise their title tilt after their campaign came off the rails with a series of losses before Christmas.

However McKay is said to be keen to remain in Glasgow and continue his fight for first team football with the Old Firm side.

"With the Australian transfer window open until February 14, any possible deal would not have to be completed before the Scottish deadline on Tuesday night," reported STV in Scotland.

"However, McKay has given no indication that he is ready to quit Glasgow."

This afternoon Brisbane Roar admitted they were keeping close tabs on McKay's career at Rangers but denied having made a formal approach yet.

A spokesman added: "We are currently monitoring Matt's situation, however no official proposal has been put forward at this time."
