Could Brandon Borrello become an unexpected Socceroos bolter? Thomas Broich thinks so.
The Brisbane Roar legend they call 'Mozart' has lauded Borrello's rise in the German 2.Bundesliga, saying he's gone "to another level" since joining FC Kaiserslautern.
“I know Brandon quite well from my time in Brisbane and to watch him play now, he’s gone to another level entirely,” Broich told beIN Sports.
“It’s key for every young Australian player to have that kind of ambition and to play at that kind of level and you can see that players become much better players here in Germany.
“He’s got something to offer — he’s a very courageous young player, he’s full of energy, he’s got assists in him, he’s got goals in him and he can always give you a boost when you need it.”
After a slow start to life in Germany, Borrello's usurped the more highly-fancied Jamie Maclaren, who couldn't earn consistent game-time at Darmstadt 08, and is now a key player for his struggling German side.
His breakthrough came when Kaiserslautern changed coaches - Borrello had barely made an appearance for the side at the time - now he's played almost every minute in the last 10 matches.
The Aussie has five assists in 14 games, and scored his first goal last week in their win against Holstein Kiel.
Borrello is yet to be capped for the Socceroos, but the 22-year-old has made plenty of appearances at u/20 and u/23 level.
