Sydney FC skipper Alex Brosque says seven years is too long between silverware for his club but insists they won’t stop there with the championship in their sights.
The Sky Blues ended their seven-year wait between trophies when Melbourne Victory’s 1-0 loss to Brisbane Roar on Saturday night gave them an unassailable lead at the summit, securing the premiership.
Sydney hadn’t claimed any silverware since the 2009-10 A-League premiership and championship double with Vitezslav Lavicka as coach and players such as John Aloisi and Steve Corica in their ranks.
Brosque was also part of that side, forming a ‘Killer B’ partnership with Mark Bridge, and said it was great for the club to be back among the silverware.
“It’s great. Seven years is too long for a club like ours,” Brosque told Fox Sports.
“It’s good to be back amongst the trophies and making a bit of history with the points.
“Hopefully we carry it on, we’ve still got three games to show up for and we need to take some good form into the finals.”
Sydney team-mate Brandon O’Neill acknowledged the premiership was a nice achievement but reiterated the side’s determination to win the championship too.
“Obviously it’s a lovely touch to be named premiers,” O’Neill told Fox Sports.
“You work so hard in the season to get silverware. It was a nice little pat on the back to say well done for the season so far but our ultimate goal is to win the championship.
“Now we’ve got another four or five massive week and come May 7 in the Grand Final we want to be standing with the championship.
“If we keep going the way we’re going, we can do it.”
