Alex Brosque believes Sydney FC showed they were still the league’s best after their 1-0 win over Melbourne City on Friday.
The reigning champions came down to AAMI Park on Friday night, ended City’s winning streak and have now taken top spot on the table.
While the Sky Blues skipper said the result in itself was not a statement, he felt the way they performed showed rivals they were serious.
“Everyone had been talking about City, they hadn’t dropped any points and we came down and really played them off the park,” Brosque told FourFourTwo.
“It wasn’t a statement with the actual result, but just the fact that we went down there and beat them is.
“I think they gave us a lot of respect in the media throughout the week, we really fed off that and we noticed that they mentioned if they were at their best they could match us.
“Little comments like that make us realise what a good position we’re in.”
Brosque also said the playing group observed City’s tendency to absorb pressure and to wait for the opportunity to counter-attack.
He added: “City sitting back played right into our hands, I felt we moved the ball really well.
“We probably didn’t create enough chances as we would’ve liked, but to come down to Melbourne against an undefeated team is good.
“One of our strengths is when we’re going forward and attacking, when we lose (the ball), we win it straight back and I think we did that against City.”
Sydney return to Gosford next week to take on Central Coast Mariners and will also have the FFA Cup Final to come towards the end of the month.
The Sky Blues reached the Cup final last season only to fall at the final hurdle to City.
But Brosque admitted lifting the trophy wasn't uppermost in their minds as they looked to maintain a strong A-League run ahead of an AFC Asian Champions League battle later in the season.
“If you look at a team like Melbourne Victory, they’re struggling to pick up points at the moment and they’d give anything to have more points than an FFA Cup trophy,” Brosque said.
“We’re the same, we prefer to just keep winning, racking up the points in the league and that’s the most important thing for us.
“The final is in the back of our minds, but we’re not worrying about it too much. It’ll be a great occasion, the fact it’s at home means less for us to worry about.
“We need to keep winning in the A-League to make sure when the ACL comes around that we’re ready for that as well.”
