Sydney FC captain Alex Brosque believes Ange Postecoglou will not pick him for any future Socceroos squads because he is too old.
Brosque is in career best scoring form in the A-League this season having many observers believing the Sky Blues attacker’s performances warrant selection for Australia.
However, the 33-year-old striker feels his time with the national team is done and that Ange Postecoglou’s mindset is on youth.
“When he came in he changed a lot of things,” he said. “He brought in a lot of young players and now he’s got good core group of players there. To be fair they have been doing a fantastic job. They won the Asian Cup and he’s doing very well.
"So I just thought from his point of view, Ange has go to keep an eye on the World Cup so he’s going to bring in younger players. To call an older player of my age probably goes against everything he is doing. If it happens great, but like I said Ange is playing a great style of football he’s got a good group of players that are getting the job done and I just feel it will continue to be that way.”
Except for Tom Juric, goals by Australian strikers have been hard to come by of late with Apo Giannou, Tim Cahill, and Jamie Maclaren not finding the net for the Socceroos in the previous five World Cup Qualifiers.
When it comes to providing a point of difference to the current attacking options in the national team squad, Brosque was hesitant in putting himself forward.
“There has been a bit of pressure on Jamie Maclaren but to be fair he’s a great player and he’s done a good job whether I can offer something different to him I’m not too sure,” he said.
“Our games this year are quite similar we both look to make forward runs and getting in behind. Coming off the year that he had last year - to be fair, he is scoring this year as well. Weather I can offer something different I’m not sure I guess. I really don’t know.”
Meanwhile after a low crowd at their previous home game, Brosque has implored the Sydney FC faithful to come out in numbers for the clash against Wellington Phoenix tonight.
“From a team’s point of view, we are doing everything,” he said. “We are winning we are still unbeaten, we are scoring goals and we are playing good football. So we can’t be doing too much more. But our crowds are up and it has been a good year so far. And the fact that we are doing well is showing that. You want to be seeing 25 to 30,000 every time we play at home, especially when we are doing so well.
“I’m sure the crowds will continue to increase as we get to the back end of the season and hopefully they do get to see a bit of history and see us go all the way unbeaten.”
