Sydney FC captain Alex Brosque is confident enough players will stay at the end of the A-League season to give the Asian Champions League (ACL) a real crack.
The Sky Blues kick off their ACL campaign on Wednesday night against K-League Classic outfit Suwon Bluewings.
Striker Bobo declared at the end of January that Sydney were capable of winning the championship and the ACL.
Brosque also believes Sydney have almost developed an unassailable lead on top of the table, leading by 12 points, however second-placed Newcastle Jets have a game in hand.
The 34-year-old felt there was enough team chemistry in the squad to take them far in the ACL.
“We’re riding a wave at the moment you probably won’t see again in the A-League,” Brosque told FourFourTwo.
“A lot of boys want to continue to be a part of it and if they stay, we can definitely win the Champions League.
“For us to throw the premiership away now would be very hard. I think the draw is kind and the FFA has looked after us as well, it will get harder, but we can handle it.
“We’ve seen over the years how teams slightly fade away, but the boys want to be here and they’re enjoying it.
“If you’re playing this sort of football, to leave and start somewhere new, you’re not going to get this again.
“We had to get as much of a lead as we could and get to this point with a bit of breathing space. We’re 12 points ahead now, we’ve definitely done that.”
Suwon will be without former Sky Blue Matt Jurman as he has undergone a minor knee operation, however captain and South Korean international Ki-Hun Yeom could pose a threat on the wing.
And with all the issues surrounding Australian football in the past two years, Brosque said the club did not feel they owed the nation a successful ACL campaign.
“We feel as if we owe it more to ourselves and that we have the quality to do it,” he said.
“We’ve seen good teams in the past do very well in the Champions League. With the team we have, we really feel we have given ourselves enough of a lead in the A-League to be able to have a real go at it and give everything we have, so we’re confident.”
