Brisbane Roar defender Corey Brown will miss the next three weeks with a hamstring problem but Corey Gameiro is closing in on a return after almost two years out injured.
Left-back Brown, 23, was replaced in the first half of Brisbane’s 2-1 home loss to Newcastle Jets on Sunday and coach John Aloisi confirmed he’ll be out of action for the next few matches.
“It’s really disappointing for Corey,” Aloisi said.
“It’s part of football. It’s part of overcoming obstacles and he’s still a young professional.”
Brown was one of Roar’s standout players last season and Aloisi said he could learn from the injury.
“It’s how he recovers and rebounds from it,” Aloisi said.
“It’s an opportunity for him to watch from a distance and see how we’re going to play and how he can improve as a player.
“I’m sure he’ll come back stronger than ever.”
Roar reshuffled their backline against the Jets, with Jade North moving to left-back to replace Brown and Jack Hingert substituted on to play right-back.
Aloisi hinted that was the likely starting option this Saturday against Welington Phoenix although he didn’t rule out starting Dane Ingham or Connor O’Toole.
“The result we saw on the weekend, Jado moving over to the left-back and Jack coming in, we dominated the second half,” Aloisi said.
“Our back four looked really good.”
Meanwhile, new signing Corey Gameiro is in contention after multiple ACL injury lay-offs, having not played competitively since November 2015.
Former Fulham junior Gameiro, 24, joined Roar in the off-season from Melbourne City.
Aloisi said Danish midfielder Kristensen would miss Saturday’s game with an ongoing hamstring complaint.
“Corey Gameiro is looking sharp,” Aloisi said. “We’re not sure yet.
“It’s too early for TK. He is still a little bit off. We’re not sure when he’ll be back for.
“That’s the situation we’re in, we know we’ve had a few players out in the first few games and pre-season but we’ve got enough quality to pick up results.”
