Victory lost form centre back Rhys Williams before a brain snap by Mark Milligan saw the visitors reduced to 10 against a red-hot Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Milligan was sent off for retaliating with a headbutt to the chest of former teammate Daniel Georgievski who had already received a yellow card for fouling the Socceroo.

“We only have ourselves to blame as a playing group,” Broxham told Fox Sports post-match.

“Obviously receiving a red card was detrimental to us. We keep letting ourselves down with things like that.”

Kevin Muscat’s men, who were in the hunt for just their second win of the season after seeing of Perth Glory 2-0 on Sunday, got off to the perfect start despite the short turnaround.

Returning to the line-up following international duty, All White Kosta Barbarouses unleashed a stunning strike to put Victory in the lead on five minutes.

But an equaliser by Georgievski, followed by the Milligan send-off, sparked an attacking onslaught as Andrew Nabbout (37’, 83’) and Joey Champness (75’) killed off any hope of a Victory hold-out.

The Melbourne outfit have a reputation for gutsy performances in the face of adversity and in Round 5 a 10-man Victory came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Western Sydney Wanderers.

Last night they never looked like keeping the Jets at bay. Broxham said the loss of Williams and  Milligan was no excuse for the performance.

“We should be able to deal with an injury like that and we’ve shown before that we can deal with 10 men but it wasn’t to be tonight,” he said.

“We made some silly mistakes that we should be able to rectify.”
