A first career brace for winger Bruce Kamau has seen Melbourne City draw first blood in the 2017/18 A-League opener with a 2-0 win over Brisbane Roar.
Kamau lit up what was largely a dour match with a goal in each half at AAMI Park on Friday night.
A jubilant Kamau, who has already doubled last season’s tally for City, could hardly disguise his excitement after the final whistle.
“I’m very happy,” he told Fox Sports post-match. “Me and a few of the boys have been practicing our finishing and it’s started to pay off.”
It looked like being another unproductive night for 22-year-old until he struck on the cusp of half-time.

The winger showed plenty of composure to cushion the ball before passing it through heavy traffic into the bottom right corner of the net on 45'.
He did it again on 74' when Nick Fitzgerald, who put in an impressive shhift, cut the ball back to Kamau, whose deflected shot put City up 2-0.

Kamau scored just once last season and was pumped to get the first two goals of the new campaign - the City player becoming something of a bogeyman for the Queenslanders scoring four of his six A-League goals against Roar.
It was just what new coach Warren Joyce needed after a lacklustre FFA Cup campaign and Kamau paid tribute to the City boss.
“We’ve come in with a new coach and he’s brought in his own way of doing things," he said.
“He’s worked us hard, he’s helped us with our finishing and he’s brought the boys together.”
