The Uruguayan netted twice inside the first half hour which was dominated by City in Remembrance Round in front of only 7,745 fans.

Newcastle, who responded through Andrew Nabbout's deflected strike on 35 minutes, remain down in seventh on the table following three straight defeats.

To make matters worse for the Jets, skipper Nigel Boogaard was injured in the dying minutes in a major worry moving forward.

Tim Cahill almost opened the scoring with a trademark header from Ivan Franjic’s cross which was palmed away by Jack Duncan in the third minute.

The Jets would rue the miss a minute later when Andrew Hoole’s low cross found Morten Nordstrand in the six yard box but he blazed over the crossbar from point blank range.

Fornaroli would open the scoring in the 14th minute mark as fellow South American Fernando Brandan teed up El Tuna to head it past Duncan.

The Uruguayan got his second just before the half hour after another cross by City, this time from Bruce Kamau who whipped a ball into the box which Fornaroli finished with a class volley.

Former Melbourne Victory midfielder Nabbout returned to AAMI Park for the first time since he left City’s rival and a venomous shot only managed to clip the side netting with 11 minutes remaining in the first half.

The 23-year-old got his goal a minute later as he tried his luck from outside the box. The shot took a strong deflection off Michael Jakobsen to beat Dean Bouzanis.

Kamau almost made it 3-1 three minutes into second half, but hurt himself in the process with Jason Hoffman after a collision in the box from Fornaroli’s cross, but the youngster eventually continued to play.

Two minutes later Hoffman’s ball into the box had Nordstrand attempting a bicycle kick which failed to make any clean contact.

The Jets managed to stay in the game with neither team unable to create any clear cut chances for the rest of the game.

Newcastle had a corner at the final minute, but could not convert it with Hoffman’s header flying wide.

City are away next Friday night against Western Sydney Wanderers while the Jets have the F3 derby against Central Coast Mariners at home.
