The Uruguayan was originally contracted until the end of the 2016/17 season, but the club announced today that the forward will be staying with City until the end of 2019.

El Tuna enjoyed a stellar 2015/16 season at City finishing fourth and scoring 25 goals in 27 games and falling short in the Semi-Final to eventual champions Adelaide United was a motivating factor to stay.

“I only have this on my mind (winning the league), I want this. When I came here last season I said that and I continue to think this way,” Fornaroli said today.

“When you think of something good like winning the title, you need to have one objective when you work hard and for me winning the league is the first one.

“When I came in last year I said ‘I want to win the league, I want to be involved in the club’s first league title’, so I’m happy to have more opportunities.

“If you don’t win, it doesn’t matter if you’re second. Nobody called me to tell me ‘great, you came second’, no, people will only call to say ‘great, you’ve won the league’, so I want this.”

Fornaroli’s on-field ambition was clear, however he conceded he didn’t think he would commit to City for four years originally.

The 28-year-old was impressed with the standard of the A-League and was happy with the shape of the squad currently. City have brought in a total of five key signings - Neil Kilkenny (Preston North End), Fernando Brandan (Atletico Temperley), Luke Brattan (Manchester City loan), Bruce Kamau (Adelaide United) and Manny Muscat (Wellington Phoenix).

“Not really (long term club), but this is football. Sometimes it’s crazy and I find we’re a very good club that’s helped me too much not only on the pitch, but also off for me and my family and that’s the reason why I re-signed and stayed here,” he said.

“I found the league wasn’t easy to play here, also for Fernando (Brandan) from Argentina to come now, I said to him ‘you’ll find it’s a good league, if you’re not ready and don’t put 100 per cent on the pitch, you can’t win in this league’.”

Meanwhile, the Tim Cahill saga continues, with reports he had signed for City. However it still hasn’t been confirmed if the Socceroo legend will be playing there next season - but Fornaroli is ready to welcome him with open arms.

“Of course I think we can play together, I hope it will happen. I don’t know if he’s going to sign or if he’s coming, but I’m going to work hard now and of course if Tim comes, he’s the perfect player for us,” Fornaroli said.

“I hope that Tim comes, for me he’s a fantastic player, but I don’t know at the moment.”
