FOOTBALL Federation Australia chief executive officer Ben Buckley claims Harry Kewell's move to the A-League to play for Melbourne Victory is a 'red-letter day' for football in the country.

Kewell was officially unveiled as a Victory player on Saturday after a drawn-out transfer saga played out over several months following his release from Galatasaray earlier in the European summer.
The high-profile Socceroo's presence in Australia will be a major boost for the A-League and Buckley was delighted the deal could be done.
“This is a red-letter day for the Hyundai A-League and Australian football,” Buckley said in an FFA press statement.
“The signing of Harry Kewell tells the story of ambition, credibility and growth for the game in Australia.
“Harry is rightly acclaimed as Australia’s most gifted footballer with a celebrated record of achievement. His homecoming will be hugely popular.
“On behalf of FFA, I congratulate the Melbourne Victory and wish Harry Kewell every success in this exciting phase of his career.”
Meanwhile, Sydney FC, who Victory beat in the chase for Kewell, congratulated their rivals on the Socceroo's signing.
Sydney chief executive officer Dirk Melton said in a club statement: “This is very exciting news for the Hyundai A-League and Melbourne Victory should be congratulated.
“We have been in open discussions with Harry Kewell and his management over the last seven weeks. The discussions with Harry were part of developing a list management process that enables us to focus on a number of opportunities at any point in time while completing our playing roster.
“Sydney FC is in an exciting period of change and one of the primary objectives for the Club in the current phase of our evolution is to bring players to our organisation that will significantly assist us build a solid foundation for the future.
“We need players that can help us connect to all key stakeholders ranging from fans and members, the broader community, corporate partners and the media. It is about being patient and finding the right players at the right time and I’m sure Harry will be that player for Melbourne Victory."
