A-LEAGUE clubs could miss out on signing Trent McClenahan after the player’s current club Hereford United offered him a new deal.
Earlier this week the 23-year-old defender told au.fourfourtwo.com that he wouldn’t rule out a switch to an Australian club.
At that stage he was still waiting for newly-promoted Hereford to put a fresh deal on the table but manager Graham Turner has now put an undisclosed offer to McClenahan.
He is one of four players to be offered new deals along with Dean Beckwith, Simon Johnson and Jack McLeod.
McClenahan is currently preparing for the Olyroos Intercontinental Cup semi-final against the Republic of Ireland in Malaysia this evening.
The former West Ham United youngster has helped Graham Arnold’s men to three wins out of three at the Beijing warm-up tournament and it seems likely that United’s deal will not be the only one on the table.
It may be that he is ready for a bigger stage than Edgar Street. He said: “When you’re at a bigger club I suppose you get noticed more and more publicity. In a sense maybe you do have to work harder and have to prove yourself a little bit more.
“It’s fair to say my options are open at this stage. You just want to choose the best option open to you.”
