Lukas Podolski's late penalty gave Cologne a crucial 1-0 victory in the fight against relegation, winning at Stuttgart to move out of last place and go level on points with their opponents.
The Germany striker converted from the spot in the 82nd minute for the only goal of the game.
The victory - just Cologne's second in the last 10 games - moves Frank Schaefer's team to 11 points for 17th place - one point ahead of Borussia Monchengladbach.
St Pauli and Wolfsburg split the spoils in a hard-fought 1-1 draw which does little to help either team.
Markus Thorandt gave St Pauli the lead in the 28th minute before Edin Dzeko equalised after 54 minutes for his ninth Bundesliga goal of the season.
The result ends St Pauli's four-game losing streak but leaves them down in 14th place, three spots behind Wolfsburg.
