AUSSIE Nathan Burns finally enjoyed a taste of action for his Greek club AEK Athens this weekend as he came off the bench to help them to a 2-1 win over FC Xanthi.
The former Adelaide United striker has had to wait patiently for game time this season but found himself on the bench for this weekend's game.
He was thrown into the fray after 65 minutes of the clash, replacing El Hadj Diouf at the Spyros Louis Stadium.
Nathan couldn't get on the scoresheet but two of his teammates did with goals from Arnaldo Edinho (10 minutes) and Ismael Blanco (49 minutes) proving decisive.
As for other Aussies in Europe, Tim Cahill returned from suspension for Everton and scored the opener against West Brom in the English Premier League.
Cahill started the match up front with Brazilian Jo and when Leighton Baines curled an Everton free kick into the box Tim broke away from his marker and headed home his eighth goal of the season for the Blues.
Cahill was pushed back into midfield on the hour as Everton attempted to stem a flow of attacking raids from West Brom and they ran out winners 2-0. The Blues are now only two points away from fifth placed Arsenal.
Cahill spoke to Sky Sports after the game. He said: ''I'm just happy to be getting the
goals.
''We knew West Brom are a great passing team and they don't deserve to be at the bottom. We knew today was going to be one of the hardest games of the season.''
Mark Schwarzer ensured Arsenal's goal drought continued as he prevented the Gunners scoring for a fourth straight premier league match in Fulham's 0-0 draw at The Emirates.
Schwarzer blocked a powerful header from Robin Van Persie on ten minutes and then denied the Dutchman another close range effort after half an hour of play.
Late in the game Arsenal put the pressure on as they tried for a goal to please the home fans but Mark was up to the task as he blocked a downward header from Abou Diaby with his feet and then tipped a powerful drive from Russian Andrei Arshavin behind the post.
Brad Jones' Middlesborough earned their first victory in 15 games and in doing so inflicted Liverpool's first defeat in 15 games. Jones kept a clean sheet in the match blocking shots by Dirk Kuyt and Steven Gerrard in the 2-0 victory.
While the result damages Liverpool's title hopes, more importantly for Brad it lifts Middlesborough out of the relegation zone ahead of rivals Stoke and Blackburn's games tomorrow.
Celtic trounced St Mirren 7-0 in the Scottish Premier League but while Japan's Shunsuke Nakamura scored a hat-trick, Scott McDonald was not among the goals.
McDonald has a chance in the 25th minute but he shot wide of the goal and three minutes later as Scott was about to fire from ten yards out he was brought down by Jack Ross who was given a straight red.
Jan Vennegoor missed the ensuing penalty however and Scott was substituted in the 69th minute after the sixth goal was scored.
Trent Mclenahan started for Hamilton Academical in their 1-0 loss to the SPL leaders Rangers but came off early in the second half.
Adam Federici's Reading have failed to score for four consecutive games in the English Championship and they paid for it with a 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest.
Federici tipped a shot from Nottingham's Chris Cohen around the post in the 57th minute but he was beaten three minutes later by Lewis McCugan who scored the winner for Forest.
In League One Neil Kilkenny was back in the starting line up and played an hour for Leeds United in their 3-2 win over Scunthorpe.
The Aussie squad turned out for Genclerbirligi in their 0-0 draw with Ankaraspor in the Turkish Super Lig. Mile Jedinak and Bruce Djite started while James Troisi came on as a substitute for Djite in the second half.
Michael Petkovic's Turkish Lig leaders Sivasspor faltered against Fenerbahce. In a game where seven bookings were issued Sivasspor took the lead twice in the first half before Fernerbahce finished them off 4-2.
Brett Holman had a late showing off the bench for Dutch Eredivisie leaders AZ Alkmaar as they comfortably beat FC Groningen 3-0 while Jason Culina had a night to forget in the Eredivisie on Friday night.
With the PSV Eindhoven and Heerenveen locked at 2-2 in injury time Culina was given a straight red card for pushing his opponent in the box and Heerenveen won the game 3-2 from the ensuing penalty.
