Former Sydney FC boss Terry Butcher has watched his new club go down 3-0 in the first round of the Carling Cup.
His Brentford outfit were easily accounted for by Bristol City, with Butcher blaming poor defending for the heavy defeat.
"We played well for an hour but didn't score," he said.
"We created chances but we have to defend better in order to be hard to beat.
"It was a harsh lesson and we all learned from it. If you give the ball away too quickly you will get punished."
Bristol City’s Phil Jevons and Marvyn Elliott were the goal-scorers who gave the Championship side victory and booked their place in the second round.
