In a match which saw a controversial touchline bust-up between the respective coaches, Cahill scored after 33 minutes before Mikel Arteta sealed the Toffees win late.

Cahill's goal came from a free-kick which he had won on the right, before Mikel Arteta layed off for Leighton Baines who whipped in a cross which the Australian international glanced home.

Only minutes earlier, the dangerous Cahill had fired narrowly over.

The Aussie was at it again just after the break, when he tried to lob City stopper Shay Given only for his effort to go wide.

But late in the contest it was Cahill's awareness which helped Everton grab their second goal.

Jack Rodwell did brilliantly down the left before cutting the ball back, with Cahill dummying for the oncoming Arteta to seal the victory.

Cahill's goal takes his season tally to seven for Everton, with five coming in the Premier League where the Toffees are currently eighth.

In England's FA Cup overnight, Mark Schwarzer didn't have a great evening as Fulham were knocked out 3-1 by Tottenham in their quarter-final replay at White Hart Lane

Fulham had been ahead at the break, but Spurs fought back with David Bentley's 47th minute free-kick deceiving Schwarzer and going straight in, with a crowded box not the Aussie's helping his cause.

Schwarzer denied Bentley soon after with a sharp stop, but on the hour mark Roman Pavlyuchenko beat the Socceroo at his near-post with a good volley.

And Eidur Gudjohnsen rounded out the scoring on 66 minutes, when he beat Schwarzer to the ball inside the box and coolly slotted in the third, which sees Spurs into a FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.

In Switzerland's Super League, Scott Chipperfield scored again for FC Basel as they triumphed 4-1 over champions FC Zurich.

After Marco Streller's early strike, Chipperfield rose on 18 minutes to meet Streller's cross to double Basel's advantage.

The goal was Chipperfield's eighth for the season, which is impressive considering he's had an injury-hit campaign.

And the Aussie veteran, who got through a rare full 90 minutes, was involved in Basel's fourth goal, providing the assist for Jacques Zoua Dougari.

In Holland's KNVB Beker semi-final, David Carney returned after a long stint out with a shoulder injury as FC Twente were beaten 2-1 by Feyenoord.

Carney was an 88th minute substitute for Eredivisie leaders Twente, who missed out on a spot in the cup final.

In Italy's Serie A, Mark Bresciano remains on the sidelines for Palermo, as he wasn't in their matchday squad as they drew 2-2 at Genoa.

Palermo remain in fourth on the table, but sixth-placed Juventus can leapfrog them when they play on Thursday.

Returning to England's Premier League, Brett Emerton was an 88th minute substitute for Blackburn in their 2-1 win over Birmingham City. Again, there was no Vince Grella.

In England's Championship, Adam Federici helped in-form Reading to another win, 2-1 at Leicester City. Federici produced a sensational save to deny Andy King at 1-1.

In Scotland's Premier League, James Wesolowski played 71 minutes as Hamilton claimed an important 2-1 win over Danny Invincibile's Kilmarnock. Wesolowski's deflected cross provided the assist for the opener.

Finally, in Croatia's HR Nogometni Cup semi-finals, Josip Skoko put in a full shift as Hajduk Split took a step towards the final by recording a 0-0 draw at Dinamo Zagreb in the first-leg.
