Tim Cahill is believed to be on the cusp of signing with the A-League’s Melbourne City for as much as $4 million a season.
The 36-year-old’s contract with Chinese club Huangzhou Greentown expires this month.
Should he sign it will mark the first time Cahill has played professionally in Australia.
His Chinese club did offer an extension which he knocked back.
His signing would be the biggest in the A-League’s history and a major coup for the organisation as it negotiates a new broadcast deal.
His salary would be aided by the A-League’s marquee fund which was set up to help clubs lure star players.
