Socceroos superstar Tim Cahill says he needed his 30-minute debut cameo as Melbourne City edged past Brisbane Strikers 2-1 in the FFA Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday night.
Playing in front of 3,571 fans at Perry Park, Cahill entered the fray after 64 minutes and spurned a good chance when in on goal.
Cahill visibly wanted to take the decisive spotkick on 78 minutes, but City skipper and usual penalty taker Bruno Fornaroli stepped up to score.
Despite not getting on the scoresheet, Cahill said the 30-minute hit-out was what he needed, particularly ahead of next week’s Socceroos’ World Cup qualifiers.
“I needed something,” Cahill told Fox Sports. “That’s my first game-time in about six or seven weeks.
“I had a tough week the last six days after arriving from New York. It’s tough but probably what I needed.
“Obviously I would’ve liked to have done a bit more on the pitch but time will tell.
“I’ve got a few games coming up with the Socceroos and we’ll see what happens.”
Cahill’s debut attracted a bumper crowd at Perry Park and revelled in the occasion.
“I suppose this is what it’s all about,” the 36-year-old said.
“To come to play places like this and help fill the ground and contribute for 30 minutes is nice.
“This is amazing, it’s really good for this place.”
Cahill was full of praise for the Strikers who took the lead in the first half through Greig Henslee and had their chances.
“It reminds me of the good old days with Millwall when we used to play Premier League teams and how much we were up for the game,” he said.
“These guys were up for it. It was a big moment for them tonight. They can be proud of what they achieved.
“They were a good little team. They had a lot of chances. For us, fortunately, they didn’t take them.”
