Results from the recently launched Castrol Performance Analysis shows that Ronaldo performed better at the end of last year at his new side in Spain than he did for former club Manchester United earlier in 2009.

In joint second position were Barcelona duo Lionel Messi and Thierry Henry.

"Now that I have made it to number one, I will do everything I can to hold onto the position," said Ronaldo. "I know the only way I will hold onto this position is to maintain my form. That is a great incentive to me as great players must consistently perform well at the highest level and that is exactly what I aim to do.

"Moving to Spain last year provided me with a great challenge and I believe this result shows that I have responded well to it."

La Liga dominates the Castrol Rankings with eight of the top ten players currently based in Spain. Barcelona also have 10 players in the top 50, three more than Chelsea.

Cahill was the top Aussie at number 100 in the world, with Mark Schwarzer at 112, followed by Mark Bresciano (329), Vince Grella (681), Lucas Neill (813), Richard Garcia (1186), Brett Emerton (1372), Dario Vidosic (1928) and Matthew Spiranovic (2316). Socceroo favourite Harry Kewell didn't make the list as he doesn't play in one of Europe's top five leagues.
