SOCCEROO Tim Cahill is thoroughly enjoying Everton's pre-season tour of the United States and says he could see himself playing in the Major League Soccer once he's 'finished' with the Toffees.
Cahill's Everton lost 1-0 to MLS club Philadelphia Union on Wednesday and take on another US top flight side, DC United, on Saturday evening local time as the Toffees continue to build fitness ahead of the season’s beginning in August.
It’s not Cahill’s first time in the States, but the trip has been quite the experience.
“This is a great trip. It’s great for us to sample different areas of America. To go to Philly was special, the fans were grand,” he told reporters after a Friday training session.
However, after only spending a couple more days in Washington – America’s capital – he came away even more impressed.
“This is the highlight for most of the boys,” he said. “Everyone says what’s special about Washington – the White House is here, there’s a great football team, a lot of great monuments and history and so much here.
“I’m 31-years-old, so I appreciate the other sides of travelling places, the culture and the people.”
Cahill also expressed an admiration for MLS and didn’t rule out a possible move there one day when his time at Everton is up.
“We travel here every year for holidays with my family, I enjoy the MLS and the weather so it’d be a no brainer, when I’m finished,” he said.
Prior to pre-season, Cahill had the summer off, with no international obligations giving him a chance to recover and take time off for the first time in a long time.
“It’s been fantastic to not play international games and to get a bit of a rest,” he said. “It’s probably the first four weeks in a row that I’ve had a summer off in seven years.
“To come to America and get hyped and fit for the season is an added bonus. It’s great for us to travel and come here and get here to work.”
While there is a chance to enjoy things while seeing new parts of the country, there’s also business to be done, as Everton opens the Premier League season on August 13 against Tottenham.
The work put in now will help the Toffees look to get off to a good start in the coming year.
“The main thing for us is to be as fit as possible for the first game against Tottenham,” he said.
“If we can get off to a good start, maintain some consistency, that’s the recipe for a decent season."
