Acting Socceroos boss Han Berger opted not to risk the duo after consulting both players' clubs before deciding to excuse the pair from national duty.

It's been a hectic few months for the Everton star since the World Cup in South Africa and it's believed he has been battling a few niggling injuries ahead of the new Premier League season.

Following the World Cup, Cahill, 30, returned almost immediately to Everton playing duties, travelling to Australia to play a number of games as part of the Toffees' pre-season preparation.

Everton begin their EPL campaign against Blackburn this weekend and Toffees manager David Moyes will be keen to have Cahill at his disposal.

Berger hasn't called any additional players into the squad meaning he will have just 16 at his disposal for Australia's first match since their World Cup Victory over Serbia in June
