SOCCEROO Tim Cahill has opened his account for new club New York Red Bulls after scoring in their 3-2 victory over Portland Timbers in the MLS on Monday morning (Australian time).
The 32-year-old Australian attacker levelled the game after Portland had raced to a two-goal lead early in the contest.
Cahill swooped to volley home with a fine left-foot drive on 45 minutes after Dax McCarty's long-range effort hit a Timbers defender's arm.
The goal was controversial as referee Jason Anno had awarded a penalty for handball after McCarty's shot struck an arm, but Cahill's goal stood.
Heath Pearce would net an 83rd minute winner for New York but after the game Portland's Bright Dike fumed at the referee allowing Cahill's goal rather than awarding the spotkick.
"It hurt us. The ref clearly blew the whistle and three or four of our players just stopped," he said.
"You can't take advantage like that after the whistle was blown. Things just started to slip away from that point."
