The Socceroos’ favourite was one of the few shining lights for the green and gold but with the tournament now over, Cahill’s focus is now firmly on domestic matters.

Having been training with the reserves and junior players since his return (the senior Everton squad having been on a pre-season tour to the USA) Cahill was due to be reunited with his colleagues today.

Everton take on Werder Bremen at Goodison Park tomorrow night and Moyes is hoping fit-again Cahill can recapture the scoring touch for the Toffees.

He told the Liverpool Echo: “Tim started the season very well last year and got some goals so I’m hoping he will come back the same.”

Cahill rattled in seven goals in his first 12 games following last year’s World Cup finals and Moyes would love a repeat of that sort of scoring hot streak.

Tomorrow’s friendly against the German outfit will be the midfielder’s first domestic outing since breaking a foot against Sheffield United in early March.

Moyes said: “We’re looking forward to having him back, we’ve not had him in the squad since the Sheffield United game when he broke his foot.

“He’s back training at Bellefield so we’re looking forward to getting him to join the squad on Monday and no doubt he’ll play a part in the game against Werder Bremen on Tuesday.”

And Moyes hopes it will be a refreshed and rejuvenated Cahill that pulls on the Everton shirt again.

The Everton boss said: “He got through (the Asian Cup) okay and he didn’t start any of the games so maybe he has had a bit of a rest and not done too much.

“But he’s fit enough now to come back in and won’t need too much time, I’m hoping, pre-season training wise.”
