EUROROO WRAP: Socceroo Tim Cahill headed Everton into an early-lead as the Toffees defeated Sunderland 2-0 in the English Premier League overnight.
The Australian international flicked Marouane Fellaini's near-post cross into the far corner to give Everton a sixth-minute lead.
Cahill then nodded Leighton Baines' long-ball into Landon Donovan's path and the American doubled Everton's lead after just 19 minutes.
The Socceroo might have grabbed a brace when he got on the end of Louis Saha's knock-on, but he produced an uncharacteristically poor finish from close-range.
Elsewhere in England's Premier League overnight, Brett Emerton put in a full shift for Blackburn as they defeated Wigan 2-1.
The Aussie midfielder was impressive in the win, providing plenty of creativity whilst also doing a good defensive job.
It was from an Emerton cross that Blackburn got the opener after Wigan keeper Vladimir Stojkovic only parried his deep ball into Morten Gamst Pedersen's path.
In England's Championship, Nick Carle won his first start for Crystal Palace since October as they lost 2-0 at Newcastle.
Cash-strapped Palace had just 14 men in their squad for the journey north, creating an opportunity for Carle and he wasn't bad with some good crosses.
In Scotland's Premier League, young Aussie Rocky Visconte made his league debut for Hearts as a 61st minute substitute in their 3-0 loss to Aberdeen.
Elsewhere in the SPL, Scott McDonald was on the sidelines injured as Celtic slumped to a 2-1 home loss to Hibernian.
In Turkey's Kupasi, Michael Petkovic was back in the Sivasspor side after over month out, but he conceded four goals as they lost 4-0 to Bursaspor. Sivasspor are now eliminated.
Elsewhere in the Turkiye Kupasi, Lucas Neill and Harry Kewell were both absent as Galatasaray drew 0-0 at Ankaragucu. Cimbom, though, have reached the quarter-finals.
In Belgium's Beker van Belgie, Nikita Rukavytsya was a 58th minute substitute as Roeselare defeated Kortrijk 1-0 to qualify for the semi-finals on away goals.
In Holland's KNVB Beker, David Carney's FC Twente cruised in the semi-finals after a 4-0 win at Sparta Rotterdam. Carney wasn't involved due to a shoulder problem.
In Scotland's Cup, Simon Storey played a full game while Frankie Lagana was a 64th minute substitute as Airdrie crashed out 3-1 to Raith Rovers.
In England's League Two, Chris Herd put in a full shift for Lincoln City as they lost 2-1 at Burton Albion.
