SOCCEROO Tim Cahill has targeted becoming Australia’s greatest ever goalscorer after he discovered he’s closing in on Damian Mori's record.
Cahill grabbed his 21st international goal against Serbia in South Africa, moving him within eight of Mori who notched up 29 goals for the green and gold.
But the Everton star wasn't even aware of his target tally.
"Mori's on 29? I didn't even know = I don't have a clue," said Cahill, speaking at the Optus ‘yes' store on Sydney's George Street last week.
"In that case I'll have a good crack at it. To be honest you just play, I knew I'd score around one goal in [every] two [games].
"I didn't know Damian Mori's record and I'm just happy to have scored against some of the best teams in the world. I like to score consistently and play as many games as I can."
Cahill, 30, is already planning to represent Australia at Brazil 2014, and has an Asian Cup, full World Cup qualification campaign, plus numerous friendlies ahead to give him every chance of claiming bragging rights from NSL star Mori.
As well as scoring from midfield, Cahill has also grabbed his goals at two World Cups and against tough Asian opposition rather than the Oceania minnows Mori faced as a Socceroos striker.
But Cahill refused to credit the more modest international opposition Mori scored against as the reason for the NSL veteran's record-breaking success.
"A goal is a goal," said Cahill. "In fairness to Damian, he represented his country and scored goals, so I wouldn't hold against him who the opposition happened to be at the time."
