Melbourne City goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen believes the signing of Tim Cahill will be the key to putting the A-League on the map.
Sorensen has fond memories of Cahill in the Premier League after guarding the goals for Aston Villa and Stoke City when the Socceroo legend was still at Everton from 2004 – 2012.
As the 40-year-old approaches his second season in the A-League, he has faith that Cahill will grow the game in Australia.
“It builds the A-League, it’s not just us, hopefully we can get some more fans in and it raises the profile,” Sorensen said.
“It’s great for the A-League getting noticed not just in Australia, but everywhere else. The A-League is mentioned when I speak to people back in Denmark.
“A couple of years ago they wouldn’t have heard of the A-League, people are now taking notice and want to come here. It’s only going to be great long term and Tim is the first part and hopefully more to come.”
Despite the attention placed on Cahill being the most recognised Australian footballer, Sorensen said it would be business as usual at City. And the Dane has faith City will raise the bar this season and improve on their semi-final exit in 2015-16.
“Tim’s here to work hard, he’s not here to take away the attention from anyone, he’s here to get his head down, work hard and win some stuff with us,” he said.
“The bottom line of it is he works hard, he’s a team player and he can lead as well. He comes with experience and a good name.
“There’ll be a lot of intention, but I think the pressure shouldn’t just be on him, it should be on all of us and we want to achieve as a team.”
Other key signing Luke Brattan was also excited to play along Cahill next season and was looking forward to the experience he would bring to the squad.
“He’s very important, some of the boys won’t know that until something happens and he takes a lot of responsibility,” Brattan said.
“He’s a great leader and I can’t say enough good things about him, I’m buzzing to get started.
“For us to have an Australian player like him, it’s huge for the league and hopefully it brings a lot more exposure to the country and the football.”
