Celebrity chef and former Melbourne Victory number one ticket-holder, George Calombaris, has had his conviction for assaulting a teenage fan at the 2016/17 A-League Grand Final overturned on appeal.
Downing Centre court removed the conviction, and imposed a 12-month good behaviour bond on the MasterChef judge. Calombaris’ lawyer argued that he had suffered significant financial and personal loss as a result of the conviction, and was unlikely to reoffend.
Calombaris was recorded at the A-League final approaching a 19-year-old fan, calling him a “f***ing c***” and punching him in the stomach. In the original October court hearing, he was fined $1,000.
Following the incident, he announced a self-imposed ban from all A-League matches.
