Former Spain goalkeeper Santiago Canizares says Real Madrid boss Juande Ramos was misunderstood at Tottenham.
Ramos was sacked by Spurs in October following a dismal return of two points from the club's opening eight Premiership matches.
But after just six weeks of being unemployed the former Sevilla boss is now back in business at Real Madrid and Canizares - speaking at an event organised by Ford's feelfootball.com website - said the coach will be better equipped to re-establish his reputation in the familiar surrounds of his homeland.
"The British mentality is very different to the one Spanish people have and when he (Ramos) tried to introduce his methods at Tottenham, he wasn't able to get the players to believe in him," he said.
"A coach comes in with different methods and especially in a different country, in this case Juande in England.
"He obviously tried to introduce his methods and his way of working, but sometimes that clashes directly with the mentality of the players."
Nevertheless, Canizares, who retired at the end of last season following a glittering career which spanned 20 years and featured more than 700 competitive matches, believes Ramos is a good coach.
"I think he's a coach who works really well, who has good people around him," he said.
"He has a good team of professionals to work on all aspects of preparation and tactics, all of that's very important and that's how I judge a good coach, by the people he has around him."
Ramos took over at Madrid on Tuesday and led his new team to an impressive 3-0 win over Zenit St Petersburg in the Champions League the following night.
But the former Tottenham coach faces a baptism of fire in the Primera Liga tomorrow night, when Madrid travel to Barcelona in Spain's premier derby clash.
Madrid are currently nine points adrift of their bitter rivals and Canizares believes they are unlikely to trouble the league leaders.
Despite that he thinks Madrid can cause an upset of sorts and defeat their rivals when they meet at the Nou Camp tomorrow night.
"Everyone says that Barcelona will win the game because they can see that Barcelona are superior to Real Madrid on all levels at the moment," he said.
"Barcelona should win, but they will only do so if they have respect for their rivals."
