EXCLUSIVE: Oakleigh Cannons have already won one trophy this week, now they aim to make it a double celebration in Saturday’s VPL grand final at AAMI Park.
Standing in their way are reigning champions and minor premiers Green Gully, who know what it takes to win at AAMI Park having lifted the trophy there last season.
But Cannons boss and newly crowned VPL coach of the year Arthur Papas believes there are chinks in the Gully game-plan waiting to be exploited.
“We need to improve our ball possession. It put us under pressure last week. And we have to look at the areas where we can expose Green Gully,” he told au.fourfourtwo.com.
“And there are a few and they haven’t been tested in the last few weeks. That’s our job now.”
Papas said this week he would not change the process of how the side works and prepares for games.
“It was all about the type of work we were doing from day one, it was all aimed at being as good as you can be.
“And as good as you can be, is to make the grand final. It’s not good enough just to make a grand final, the ambition now is definitely to win it.
For A-League fans new to the VPL this is the game to see. Watch out for Ricky Diaco, Hayden Doyle and James Robinson in the Cannons’ front third.
And fans should watch out for Jamie Cummings and Craig Goodwin, a former SA premier league player who is only 19 but has scored some important goals.
While for Gully, expect Graham Hockless, Andy Vargas and Nikola Roganovic to be important cogs.
“Once both teams get onto the pitch, form goes out the window. Ultimately the best side on the day will talk home the Championship,” said Hockless.
Oakleigh captain and goalkeeper Peter Zois expects this to be a huge test against an experienced side like Gully.
“Green Gully have been here before, and on big game days their whole team is a threat,” he said.
“We definitely have our work cut out for us, but in saying that – so do they!”
The WPL Grand Final will be played at 12pm with Minor Premiers Sandringham against Gold Medal winner Laura Spiranovic and her South Melbourne FC.
As well as entry to both the VPL and WPL Grand Finals, your ticket will also get you into the Mirabella Cup next weekend for only $10.
Australia’s largest cup competition will culminate in just over a week at AAMI Park, so hold onto your Grand Final ticket to be eligible for the discounted entry price.
The WPL finale kicks off at 12pm and VPL grand final is set for 4pm. Tickets to the VPL and WPL Grand Final are currently on sale on the Football Federation Victoria website.
Papas added: “I’ve always felt if we can get to AAMI Park, on that surface and in that ground, it’ll suit us more than any ground this season.”
